While the focus on the eventual arrival of drones being used regular same day delivery services has been on Amazon.com and the testing regulations and approval by the FAA it may be Canada that offers the first regular glimpse of drone delivery. In what would provide an unexpected turn in the rush to provide on-demand delivery by air, seeing Amazon beaten to the punch by lesser known SHOP.CA would be quite a surprise.
Canadian online marketplace retailer Shop.ca was founded in Toronto in 2011 and is rumored to be going public over the coming year after recent fundraising rounds brought total investment to $75 million (CA). The rapid growth has seen the company blossom into Canada's largest store and fastest growing eCommerce site.
The company has announced that Drone Delivery Canada have been chosen to be their partner for drone service with testing and logistics integration to take place in the very near future. Trevor Newell, founder of Shop.ca stated;
“This partnership marks a milestone for our company. By Embracing Drone Delivery Canada’s next generation drone technology we are further fortifying our commitment to innovation and adding value to our customers."
We expect Amazon will react to this news by trying to rush their own regular drone delivery services to become the first company in North America to provide same day delivery by air on a regularly scheduled basis.
